Freedom and the Abyss

Life is terrifying. Life is exhilarating. We stand constantly on the edge of the abyss. We never at any point from birth to death know what the next moment will bring. It is always unknown. That is the abyss. This is our greatest challenge. This is our greatest opportunity.

The nineteenth century German philosopher Nietzsche said that when you gaze into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you. He meant is as a warning. The abyss will find you out. It tests us. If we acknowledge the abyss and move boldly on into it we can grow and discover new potentialities in our selves and our lives. If we…
